From marine scientists, grassland specialists and flood defence engineers, to biologists, epidemiologists, data specialists and many more, across the Defra group there are around 5,700 scientists and engineers representing a huge range of specialisms and knowledge.
Within core Defra we have around 100 scientists and engineers working alongside other analytical colleagues and policy specialists, as well as our HR, finance, information management and digital professionals. As well as making the most of our own resources, we extend our science, analysis and technology reach by funding research and collaborating both within the UK and internationally.
Here, there is a strong working relationship between evidence and policy specialists. Embedding our scientists and engineers into our policy teams ensures that evidence is integrated into the policy process. It can lead to novel delivery methods, and offers real opportunities to deliver more efficiently. For example we are developing options to manage air quality, and driving initiatives such as the use of Earth Observation in environmental monitoring.
Join us, and you will apply your specialist knowledge and skills to inform policy, operational and strategic decision-making. You will communicate complex science and analysis, translating it into evidence-based advice to develop robust, innovative policy solutions. You will help us to shape the future.
Science sits under our Analysts category. Please see our Analysts page for alternative roles.
